Land Based Education and Three Sisters Planting

Three Sisters Planting

Land Based Education Project at Horizon School. In June staff and students started a garden project in the courtyard at Horizon School. We were able to purchase soil, raised garden beds and seeds to get us started. Staff started some of the seeds at home early in the spring and with the help of Patrick Mitsuing and Nayte Kaye we planted Sweet Grass, strawberries, cucumber and a Three Sisters traditional garden of corn, squash and beans. This was a total group effort, Horizon students and staff and several students from Deer Meadow worked very hard weeding and planting. During the summer staff took turns watering and when students returned this fall they helped with harvest and clean up. In acknowledgement of Truth and Reconciliation Awareness Day students prepared a delicious harvest soup which was served with bannock for all staff and students to enjoy. Thanks again to all of our hard working students and staff, our friends at Deer Meadow and Patrick and Nayte!
