About Us
Horizon Alternate Program is a special needs school within Chinook's Edge School Division #73. In the fall of 2006, the school joined Chinook's Edge School Division having previously operated as a private school. Horizon School has a rich history and a long tradition of providing quality educational programming for special needs students in Olds and surrounding communities.
Horizon is a small school that offers individual programming to meet the unique needs of each individual student. Students at Horizon face a variety of challenges including communication difficulties, physical disabilities, cognitive development delays and independent life skills. Individual program plans have goals related to promoting independence, communication and physical strength and mobility. The focus of the individualized programs includes multi-sensory stimulation, functional life skills, communication skills, functional academics, and physical strength and mobility in a positive environment. The staff, who are committed to ongoing professional development, provide programs which are designed to meet the individual needs of each child in attendance.
Horizon’s facilities enhance program delivery. A greenhouse, outdoor therapeutic garden, Snoezelen Room, exercise room, gymnasium, and computer lab with assistive technology are a few of the features that make Horizon unique.
Parents interested in Horizon as an educational option for their special needs child may contact Horizon or Heather Dennill, Director of Special Education, Chinook's Edge School Division.
